Abstract The invasion of nonindigenous aquatic nuisance species (ANS) threatens the ecological integrity, biological diversity and economic health of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence system and inland waters, causing impacts that are frequently irreversible. Over the past decade, significant resources have been devoted to combat ANS invasions in this region and across the country. The ANS issue has been addressed on a national scale by Congress through the Nonindigenous Aquatic Nuisance Prevention and Control Act of 1990 (NANPCA) and its reathorization as the National Invasive Species Act of 1996 (NISA). While these legislative acts have made progress on ANS prevention and control, there are a number of persistent and complex problems that need to be addressed to effectively continue the battle against ANS invasions into the future.
