Abstract A solid substrate 'film-badge' type monitor has been developed that is capable of detecting 2-aminobenzimidazole (2-ABZI) at less than one part per million in water in less than 10 minutes. The monitor makes use of the reaction which takes place between 2-ABZI in the sample and a monolayer of its antibody that has been deposited on a thin film of indium on a glass substrate. A second approach in which the antibody is mounted on polystyrene and reaction of its antigen-binding sites with a fluorescein-labeled antigen are subject to competition with nonlabeled antigen in the sample, has been demonstrated in principle. Improvements in this alternate approach are proposed.
