Abstract A four-year research program was completed wherein the rivers and ground waters of New Jersey were sampled and tested for phenolic compounds. These chemicals originate in industrial manufacturing processes and are discharged into rivers and ground waters through the waste waters. Several samples were drawn from the deep wells in the Camden, New Jersey, area. Approximately 71% of the samples contained these phenols in quantities that exceeded the New Jersey potable water quality standard of 1 part per billion. A chemical test was discovered for the detection and identification of phenols that originate in industrial waste waters. Phenols are a water pollutant in that they have the chemical property of imparting tastes and odor to drinking water. (Author)
