| Abstract |
Millions of gallons of acid mine drainage enter our water courses every hour killing or retarding the growth of the flora and fauna. The problem is compounded when these water courses are also receiving domestic sewage. As a result of the low pH, environmental conditions develop which are unfavorable for all but a few acid tolerant strains (capable of multiplying) of bacteria. A reduction and/or selection of the microbial population takes place; bacteria mostly disappear and yeasts and filamentous fungi become the predominant forms of microorganisms. The bulletin reports the data obtained: (a) from a study of the microflora of the acid mine water-domestic sewage polluted Monongahela River; (b) from a study of the effects of acid mine drainage on the microorganisms in domestic sewage; and (c) from a determination of the amino acids present in raw sewage which could serve as nutrients for the microflora in the receiving waters.
