Abstract |
The dose of inhaled particles to the respiratory tract depends upon many factors. These factors include the size of the particles, the pattern of breathing (flow and tidal volume), the physical properties of the articles (hygroscopic or non-hygroscopic), anatomy of the respiratory tract, and the pathophysiologic status of the respiratory tract. In addition to these factors, which are primarily related to the deposition of particles, the rate of particle clearance from the respiratory tract also influences the dose of particles. The paper is a review of the various factors influencing dose of inhaled particles to the respiratory tract. The emphasis of the paper is on therapeutic aerosol particles, though the principals discussed also apply to toxic particles as well. An important areas of consideration is the influence of disease on the delivery of particle dose. From the point of view of toxic particles this is important when considering potential susceptible populations. |
