Abstract |
A summary is provided of the screening studies undertaken to evaluate the following potential agents for removing SO2p impregnated silica gels, impregnated fly ash, hydroxides, sulfides, and sodium carbonates. The report discusses the construction and operation of a sorbent screening unit which is capable of evaluating the sorption characteristics of a given material in less than one hour. The most active sorbents found in these studies were sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate. The sodium carbonates were the only materials found in this study which sorbed large amounts of SO2 at 125C, the flue gas exit temperature. A preliminary economic evaluation of the sodium carbonate sorption systems revealed that a regenerable system for an 800 mw plant would cost about $4/ton of coal for removal of 90% of the SO2. |
