Abstract |
Laboratory trials indicated that the release of soluble phosphates from activated sludge occurs primarily under anaerobic conditions. The rate of release was relatively independent of chemical environment, but corresponded to the expected death rate of microorganisms. The rapid release coincided with zero DO concentration. The release was retarded by the presence of organic substrate at the start of anoxia, but was accelerated with a higher concentration of mixed liquor suspended solids. Disruption of microbial cells is the major harmful effect of the phosphate release. Fixation of wastewater phosphorus by activated alumina is a desirable practice as it exerts no toxic influence on microorganisms. |
