Abstract |
Milwaukee harbor, separated from Lake Michigan by breakwaters, receives discharge of municipal wastewater containing large quantities of phosphorus (P) in various forms. A luxurious growth of Cladophora sp. and Ulothrix sp. along the fringes of the Milwaukee harbor as well as planktonic algae in the adjacent water indicate that the algae are beneficiaries from this concentrated nutrient source. The report determines P status--limiting or surplus--within the prevailing algae in relation to the nutrient source, demonstrates the ability of algae to hydrolyze pyrophosphate in relation to the availability of P to these algae, and elucidates some physiological adaptations in algae commensurate with eutrophication status.
