Abstract |
Ethoxylated Decyl Alcohol (CAS No. 26183-52-8) was evaluated to determine the dosage levels for a teratology study. Groups of 5 female New Zealand white rabbits were administered the test substance by gavage at dose levels of 0, 0.12, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00 g/kg/day for 13 days. Mortalities included 1 at 0.12 g/kg, 5 at 0.25 g/kg, 4 at 0.50 g/kg, 4 at 0.75 g/kg, and 5 at 1.00 g/kg. Sixteen of 19 deaths were due to respiratory distress, 2 were due to dosing error (1 each at 0.12 and 0.25 g/kg), and 1 death at 0.75 was due to gastritis. Clonic convulsion were observed at all dose levels (convulsions were more frequent at higher dose levels). Rabbits at 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00 g/kg/day groups displayed tonic convulsions and respiratory distress. There was slight weight loss at 0.50 g/kg/day, moderate weight loss at 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 g/kg/day, and severe weight loss at 1.00 g/kg/day. Food consumption was statistically decreased at 0.12, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 g/kg/day throughout the treatment period and at 1.00 g/kg/day prior to death. The level of significance in all cases was p<0.05. |
