Abstract Modifications of aircraft approach and takeoff procedures can be a relatively inexpensive means for achieving potentially great changes in the noise exposure of communities bordering airports. In 1973, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) inaugurated a revised approach procedure between 2300 and 0600 hours (weather permitting), taking advantage of the airport's proximity to the ocean and light traffic conditions by routing both inbound as well as outbound flights over the ocean during the late night and early morning hours. At the request of the Environmental Protection Agency, a study was undertaken to observe any changes in noise exposure resulting from the revised procedure. The purpose of this report is to document these changes.
