Abstract The paper gives results of bench scale experiments in a flow reactor to simulate the entrained-flow capture of elemental mercury (Hg-o) using solid sorbents. Adsorption of Hg-o by lignite-based activated carbon (Calgon FGD) was examined at different carbon/mercury (C/Hg) ratio, particle sizes, Hg-o concentrations, and temperatures. Mercury capture increased with increased in C/Hg ratio and decreased in particle size. Mercury uptake on the other hand increased in temperature over a range of 21-150 C. Increasing the residence time over a range 3.8-13 s did not increased adsorption. The rate of uptake appears to be rapid and then decreases with time.
