Contents Notes |
Livestock produce considerable quantities of solid and liquid wastes, which are relatively high in essential inorganic nutrients. The shortage of compounds containing these essential nutrients limits natural productivity on agricultural land and in aquatic sites. Therefore, these animal wastes are potentially of desirable and readily harvestable products from land and water sites. One possible, practical application is the enrichment of ponds for increased productivity of fish or clams. The major problems in the development of a biological nutrient-recycling system include dealing with low oxygen concentrations, achieving balance among various components, maximizing productivity, and minimizing the area and the volume necessary to recycle a maximum quantity of animal wastes. |
