Abstract Granular activated-carbon systems were studied in two modes. In the first mode, the systems were acting as a combined filter and adsorber and the filter beds are referred to as a sand replacement system. These carbon beds received coagulated and settled water and the activated carbon acted both as a filter for carryover solids and as an adsorbent material. The second mode employed carbon for adsorption-only by using conventional sand filters prior to the adsorption process-and is referred to as a contactor system. Major organic contaminants were determined. The emphasis for data gathering in this study focused on the economic evaluation of the use of the granular activated-carbon systems investigated.
