Abstract Phosphate removal by activated sludge was investigated in pilot- and plant-scale research conducted at the Cleveland, Ohio Easterly Pollution Control Center. These studies showed that the aeration tanks were averaging 25 percent removal of the orthophosphate in the tank influent. Pilot investigations were made to determine the amenability of the waste and activated sludge to phosphate removal. A slight increase in removal was observed with increasing MLSS or oxygen-demanding substrate concentration. Ferric iron or aluminum salt addition caused high orthophosphate removals. Orthophosphate addition resulted in reduced removal efficiency. After an acclimation period of 18 to 42 hours, the sludge removed significant quantities of orthophosphate. Excluding the chemical addition studies, the maximum removal efficiency was 67 percent. The waste and sludge were concluded as only 'moderately' amenable to phosphate removal.
