| Abstract |
Secondary clarifiers are key to the successful performance of the activated sludge process. They serve to separate out the biological solids and produce a clear effluent and to concentrate the settled solids for return to the aeration basins. Clarifiers have served the purpose for decades, but there still remains divergence of opinion as to what constitutes optimal design. To better understand the process and improve its cost effectiveness and performance, the U.S. EPA authorized a literature review and consensus developing research prioritization symposium to better understand the process and serve as a guide for future research. The objective of the literature review was to compile knowledge about what is needed for a clarifier design, what is documented and known from the literature, and what remains to be learned through further research. It is the intent that the report serve as a guide for the conduct of and funding of such future research. |
