Abstract A sampling and analysis program was conducted to determine the level of residual acrylamide monomer in selected polymers and to determine if the use of those polymers in water treatment leads to measurable levels of acrylamide in the water. Methods for the determination of acrylamide in water and in polyacrylamide were validated. Water samples were reduced in volume by evaporation and analyzed by GC using a nitrogen selective thermionic detector. The detection limit was determined to be about 1 microgram/liter. Polyacrylamide samples were extracted with 80% methanol/20% pH 3.75 water for 3 hr. The extracts were analyzed by HPLC with a UV detector set at 200 nm. The monomer limit of detection was about 0.5 microgram/g. One potable water treatment plant was sampled at pre- and post-flocculation points. MRI tap water was analyzed for comparison. No acrylamide above the detection limit was found in any of the samples. Thirty-two polymers were analyzed for residual acrylamide. When not obscured by interferences, the observed acrylamide ranged from 0.5 to 600 microgram/g.
