Abstract The primary objective of this study was to determine the applicability of weak acid exchange resin in the hydrogen form for removal of hardness, barium and radium from groundwater. Weak acid resin in the hydrogen form eliminates the addition of sodium to drinking water. The capacity of the ion exchange resin and the regeneration requirements were determined and compared with those of strong acid resins in the sodium form. Influent water contained approximately 200 mg/L as CaCO3 hardness, 250 mg/L as CaCO3 total alkalinity, 20 mg/L Ba(+2) and 20 pCi/L 226 Ra. The use of the weak acid resin with HCl regenerant would cost $0.15/1000 gal and $0.08/1000 more than the strong acid resin with NaCl regenerant for a 0.1-MGD and 1-MGD system respectively.
