Abstract Production, decomposition, and transport of detritus were investigated in the fresh-water and brackish water wetlands of the Altamaha River Delta, Georgia from April 17, 1978-April 1979. Maximum live standing crop biomass of Spartina cynosuroides, a brackish water marsh plant, was observed in July. Live material was absent in January. Standing dead material ranged from a high of 1800 + or - 275 g dry wt sq m in November to a low of 158 + or - 57 in March. Net aerial primary productivity (NAPP) of S. cynosuroides was 2029 g/sq m/yr with no differences in productivities of plots relative to the distance from the riverbank because of minimal tidal activity in the entire area. Maximum live standing crop biomass of Zizaniopsis miliacea, a freshwater marsh plant, was observed in October. Rates for marsh grasses were generally higher in the spring dropping to a low in fall and winter.
