Contents Notes The purpose of this research was to determine the feasibility of using second derivative absorption spectroscopy to analyze toxic gases and vapors associated with rocket propellants used by the Air Force. The theory of second derivative spectroscopy is discussed, and characteristics and procedures of the instrument and apparatus are described. Analysis and spectrum signatures are reported for acetone, ammonia, aniline, benzaldehyde, benzene, carbon monoxide, chlorine, chlorine trifluoride, diborane, mono-, di-, and trimethylamine, fluorine, formaldehyde, hydrazine and methyl hydrazines, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, oxygen, ozone, pyridine, sulfur dioxide, toluene, and xylene.
