Abstract This two-part document is intended to serve as a guide to the hazards associated with a broad range of chemical compounds which may be encountered in hazardous materials spills. The document addresses 655 chemicals identified on the basis of known toxicity or spill history and designated 'hazardous' by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Part A of this document is a safety and first aid reference for personnel responding to spills of hazardous materials which may involve any of the chemicals addressed. It includes safety considerations, first aid procedures, and descriptions of protective equipment; a description of the hazard-rating system used in Part B; and a priority listing of hazardous materials based on their hazard ratings and reported spill frequency.
