Abstract Carboxymethyl tartronate (CMT) was shown to be biodegradable in bench-scale activated sludge reactors. After initial exposure to CMT in continuous flow systems an acclimation period of 14 weeks was necessary before efficient degradation occurred. Once acclimated to CMT the biomass could be starved in regard to this substrate for at least 1.6 times the sludge age and still retain capacity to degrade the material upon re-introduction. Activated carbon was not found to be effective for CMT removal at a pH value of 7.
