Abstract A wind tunnel study was performed to determine the effect of a single building on the dispersion characteristics of a high-momentum heavy gas jet as it might emerge from the release valve of a pressurized storage tank. Building-surface concentrations have been measured at corresponding locations with and without the building for varying wind speeds, wind directions, source/building distances and building shapes. It was found that, compared with a free jet at corresponding distances, the presence of a single building decreases rather than increases building-surface concentration maxima and lowers the flammability or toxicity radii.
