Abstract Results of research conducted on the regeneration of spent powdered carbon is described. The study was directed toward the development of a fluidized-bed regeneration technique in which two systems were investigated. One was a system in which the dried spent carbon was regenerated during its passage through a fluidized-bed of inert material while the other system consisted of a pulsating fluidized-bed system in which the finely divided regenerated carbon served as the bed material. Although both systems restored the spent powdered carbon to 90% of its original adsorptive capacity and recovered 80% by weight, the fluidized inert bed was chosen for larger scale development because of its higher unit capacity. A pilot-scale unit was designed and constructed to process 30 pounds of spent carbon in an 8 hour period. The results indicated that regenerated carbon was as effective as virgin carbon for organic removal for at least 3.6 cycles through the system. As economic analysis indicated that operating costs would be about 1 cent per pound for a commercial plant producing 20,000 pounds of regenerated carbon per day. (WRSIC abstract)
