Abstract |
A method for the remote sensing of molecular species via the rotational Raman effect was developed. The method uses the properties of a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer to multiplex the spectra in a manner specific for a given species. Furthermore, the method allows the 'in principle' sensitivity of remote pollutants to be increased by as much as 10,000 over the vibrational Raman effect. To achieve this goal, a scheme was developed for the rejection of the Raman spectra of the abundant background gases, N2 and O2. This was accomplished efficiently and with little loss of the Raman scattered light from the pollutant species. Laboratory measurements were conducted to demonstrate the method for a few specific cases; results were encouraging. In addition to the light rejection scheme actually used, a radically new technique using the polarization properties of the Raman scattered light was also developed. |
