Abstract Instrumentation for measurement of low level drift from cooling towers was developed. Emphasis was placed on the Particulate Instrumentation by Laser Light Scattering (PILLS) System which is capable of on-line measurement and, with incorporation of existing pulse height analyzer and mini-computer equipment, complete on-line data production. Complementary techniques of isokinetic sampling (IK) and sensitive paper sampling were developed and field proven. Feasibility was demonstrated for an infrared in-line holocamera system. The design principles and engineering trade-offs for the PILLS, IK, and sensitive paper techniques are described. Drift performance data are given for a small air conditioning cooling tower unit, two large mechanical draft cooling towers, and a natural draft tower. (Author)
