Abstract One of the most significant problems produced by bottom deposits is the gradual depletion in water storage capacity. A portion of bottom sediments, termed benthic deposits, with specific gravity only slightly greater than water will eventually settle down in a layer over the other bottom deposits or remain suspended in a thin layer just above the lake or reservoir bottom. The object of the study was to consider the removal of the benthic deposits with minimum disturbance to the surrounding water. A small flume was used in the laboratory to examine the possibility of employing a laminar jet for the removal of benthic deposits. The effectiveness of such a device is discussed.
