Abstract As a result of the new Lead and Copper Rule, some water utilities in the United States have begun or will soon begin corrosion demonstration studies. Demonstration studies may include pipe rig/loop tests, metal coupon tests, and partial-system tests (full-scale). Evaluation of corrosion control treatment through testing may be accomplished by weight loss measurement, metal leaching, corrosion rate, or coupon surface inspection techniques. The purpose of the paper is to (1) briefly introduce 2 corrosion control studies being conducted at the EPA Research Facility, (2) discuss design and operational problems and considerations associated with each of the studies, and (3) present solutions to the problems. The experiences related to the paper may provide useful and time-saving insights into the design, operation, and interpretation of corrosion control studies to water utilities and suppliers.
