Abstract Carbon fibers are highly conductive, lightweight and of small dimensions. When released as emissions from production, manufacturing, processing and disposal sources they may become airborne and disperse over wide areas. If they settle onto electronic or electrical components they can cause malfunctions and damage due to their high electrical conductivity. This research program was initiated to develop techniques to identify and measure carbon fiber concentrations emitted from manufacturing, processing, fabricating and incinerating sources. Its overall objective was to develop a measurement method useful to support possible emission regulatory actions. The method was tested on samples collected from various stationary emission sources and from a pilot-scale in-house incineration facility. The results of these emission measurements are reported.
