Abstract The carbon filter provides a means for recovering from water and waste small quantities of organic substances for which no direct methods of analysis are available. The techniques of using the filter and recovering the materials are discussed. Specific applications of the filter to problems of taste and odor in refinery effluents, an approach to identification of refinery wastes in water, recovery of an insecticide, recovery of a musty component and detergents in water are pointed out.
