Abstract An evaluation was conducted to determine the capabilities and limitations of a commercially available monitoring system that provides sulfur dioxide mass emission rate data as a direct output. The monitoring system was operated continuously for extended periods at a coal-fired power plant and a sulfuric acid production facility. Additional testing was performed at a Simulated Stationary Source Facility to confirm some deficiencies noted during field operations. The system's performance was verified by comparing its output data with results using EPA emissions measurement reference methods. Results are presented for three performance tests at both field sites. For the power plant tests, the monitor agreed within 20% of the accepted reference method. In the case of the acid plant, the system accuracy was as poor at 58%. Generally, the monitoring system performed reliably throughout the extended test program. The system remained operational greater than 90% of the time during the four-month test period.
