Abstract | The removal of algae from stabilization pond effluent can be accomplished by many methods, and under certain conditions each process can be shown to be economical and operational. A discussion of the most promising procedures proposed as a means of polishing effluents is presented in the following section. Reasons for including or excluding a process from detailed field evaluation and application in small communities are pointed out. The processes and operations discussed are: centrifugation, microstraining, coagulation-flocculation, in-pond removal of particulate matter, complete containment, biological discs, baffles and raceways, in-pond chemical precipitation of suspended materials, autoflocculation, biological harvesting, oxidation ditches, soil mantle disposal, dissolved air flotation, granular media filtration, and intermittent sand filtration. | |||||||||||
