Abstract Measurements of heterotrophic bacteria in potable water can provide useful information to water plant operators and sanitary engineers. Bacterial density changes during treatment and quality deterioration during distribution can be monitored using heterotrophic plate count (HPC) methods. Consistent application of the HPC method selected will provide baseline data for assessing bacterial quality changes. Discussion will focus on optimizing the measurement of heterotrophic bacteria through choice of procedures, media and incubation time and temperature.
