Abstract The results of a biological survey of the San Diego Bay, California, to assess the effects of pollution from ships and industries on the bay's biota are presented. The survey included studies of the distribution and diversity of invertebrate organisms in or on the bottom and the depth and composition of the benthic sediments in the bay. A Peterson dredge collected bottom-associated organisms, core samples determined the extent and condition of sludge deposits, multiplate substrates collected attached benthic forms, and two SCUBA divers observed selected areas of the bay and collected representative organisms.
