Abstract Understanding regional lake quality patterns is important to lake management and restoration. It puts specific lake conditions into perspective, provides basis for establishing lake quality goals, assists identification of lakes most likely to benefit from protection and restoration and forms a framework for assessing the expected degree of restoration success. The authors describe two techniques (ecoregionalization and survey sampling) used for characterizing regional lake quality patterns. Combining the two approaches provides an effective means to consistently describe lake regions, management goals and relative restoration success. The significance of specific lake restoration success relative to regional lake quality patterns is illustrated by case examples.
