Abstract Comparative analytical procedures are defined, and their evolution from absolute methods in response to increasing demands for sensitivity is discussed. The total dependence of such methods upon accurate and reliable calibration mixtures is pointed out in some detail. Illustrative examples are given, drawn from the field of gaseous air-pollutant analysis. Applicability is projected to include newly arising sensitivity needs in the 10 to the negative 12th power regime.
