Abstract Zinc and lead concentrations and deposition rates in sediments of three New England lakes began increasing (but at different rates) ca. 1860-1880. Maximum concentration increases range from 2 to 10 times background. Sediment concentrations of Ca and Mn decline concurrently with the increase in heavy metals. These processes are attributed to increased loading of metals and acids from precipitation since that time. Maximum deposition rates of Pb and Zn range from 1 to 3 micrograms/sq cm/gr for the three lakes.
