||The purpose of the research reported was to develop methods to study the track-in of lawn-care chemicals and to carry out controlled simulations of the process. The movement of lawn-applied pesticides into the home by walking over treated turf grass (track-in) was measured over a one-week period after application. Pesticides and application methods evaluated included spray application of the herbicide acids dicamba and 2,4-D; granular application of the insecticide chlorpyrifos; and spray application of the insecticide chlorpyrifos and the fungicide chlorothalonil. A new sampling tool, the PUF Roller, was used to collect dislodgeable residues from both turf and carpeting. Replicate measurements of turf dislodgeable residues showed deviations of 2-70 percent from the mean, which is considered very good given the non-uniformity of a turf surface. The transfer from turf to dust and from turf to carpet surface dislodgeable residues was proportional to the transfer from turf to PUF: relative transfer from turf to dust was 0.8-1.6 percent of the transfer from turf to PUF; relative transfer from turf to carpet surface was 0.1-0.2 percent of the transfer from turf to PUB. For non-volatile pesticides, the herbicides in particular, both carpet dust levels and carpet surface dislodgeable residue levels were highly correlated with turf dislodgeable residue levels. For more volatile pesticides, such as chlorpyrifos, the sum of the level in the dust and in the carpet surface dislodgeable sample was correlated well with the turf dislodgeble residue level.
