Abstract The results of laboratory and field investigations of experimental sampling systems intended to collect high-molecular-weight organic compounds from flue gases in coal-fired power plants are presented. The most promising sampling device was a solid sorbent cartridge inserted directly into the flue gas stream and cooled to a temperature just above the dew point by a forced flow of external ambient air. Although certain sorbent materials were shown to be partially effective for the collection of vapors of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons at temperatures of 50 to 60C, no completely satisfactory sorbent was found. Ambersorb XE-340, a nonpolar carbonaceous sorbent, was the most satisfactory of several organic and inorganic sorbent materials tried, but its usefulness was limited by the presence of contaminants that could not be removed. The simplicity of the sampling system and the results obtained suggest that continuing efforts should be made to find a better sorbent material.
