Abstract The report discusses research on the feasibility of using satellites to study air pollution. This is not an exhaustive analysis of ways in which satellites might be used for such studies, instead it is an initial survey of several areas that look promising. The following areas are discussed: Remote sensing of particulates; The possibility of calibrating the intensity of specularly reflected sunlight and using this optical source to measure the spectral turbidity of the atmosphere; Turbidity from ATS measurements; Techniques for remote sensing of gaseous air pollutants; Measurement of Co from the SMS Satellite and, the application of lasers to air pollution research.
