Abstract An analysis was made of existing data to characterize the pollutional strength of urban stormwater runoff and combined sewer overflows. Published and unpublished data were evaluated. Extensive evaluation was made of census track data to develop data concerning land use and population densities in urban areas to assist modelling of urban stormwater discharge. An analysis of receiving water impacts was made. It was found that much of the available data was developed with consideration of the quantity of flow at the time quality was being considered. A wide variety of methods used to sample flows further complicates the use of much reported data. The estimated runoff pollutional contributions were found to exceed any contributions of treated sanitary flows at the time of a storm event. Thus, runoff pollution can govern the quality of receiving water due to the shock effect and long term buildup of solids.
