Abstract Because of the 1986 Amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act, many utilities are facing possible implementation of granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption technology to meet regulations concerning the removal of synthetic organic chemicals from drinking water. Under a jointly funded cooperative agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency, a 3-mgd GAC filtration and reactivation pilot facility was constructed at Jefferson Parish, LA, to assess the economic impact of removing trace organic contaminants from lower Mississippi River drinking water and to evaluate the performance of the infrared reactivation furnace for repeated reactivation of GAC. The article describes the design and operation of the GAC reactivation system installed at the Jefferson Parish pilot facility.
