| Abstract |
Information on pollution control practices and costs were obtained from 26 poultry processing plants and nine by-products plants in Georgia. Data were obtained on plant size and type of operation, approaches to waste treatment, expenditures, degree of environmental control achieved, and the disposition of by-products. Each plant can balance the cost of process changes to reduce waste generation with the cost of waste treatment. Plants with access to a public sewerage service can balance sewer charges against their other costs. Most plants indicated that current treatment expenses have had little effect on product prices and profits; however, both may be affected as higher water quality standards require more advanced pollution control technology. |
