Abstract The stabilization/solidification of hazardous wastes involves a series of chemical treatment procedures. The waste is normally treated so as to complex or bind the contaminants into a stable, insoluble form (stabilization), or to entrap the waste material in a solid and/or crystalline matrix (solidification). Hazardous wastes contain many constituents that could interfere with the binding process. The project is concerned with identifying possible interference mechanisms between particular waste components and commercially available waste-binding systems. The report presents a literature review and information concerning Portland cement and pozzolan chemistry, the effects of added constituents (admixtures) on their setting characteristics, and the effects of typical organic waste components on the physical and containment properties of the treated waste product. The topics are presented so that conclusions may be drawn as to possible types of interference materials that might be encountered in typical waste/binder systems.
