Abstract The problem of identyfing and assessing the relative importance of alternative sources of acidity in Maryland Coastal Plain streams was addressed by Janicki et al. (1990). They developed a model using acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) and conductivity data, which were collected during the Maryland Synoptic Stream Chemistry Survey (MSSCS), to postulate the potential sources of acidity in streams in Maryland's Coastal region. This model classified streams into four classes or groups: Group I - low ANC and low conductivity; Group II - high ANC and low conductivity; Group III - high ANC and high conductivity; and Group IV - low ANC and high conductivity. (Low ANC is defined as equal to or less than 200 micro eq/l and low conductivity is defined as equal to or less than micro S/cm.) Land use/cover patterns in the watersheds associated with these streams differed significantly among the four groups.
