Abstract The recent emergence of techniques for converting mixed municipal waste into marketable products has given municipal and regional officials a variety of new options for solving their solid waste management problems. Although these resource recovery systems cannot be expected to operate at a profit, they are becoming increasingly competitive with the cost of sanitary landfilling in many areas of the country. In addition, although they will not allow a community to close down its landfill, the life of the landfill can be extended tremendously by the weight and volume reductions achieved. The purpose of this technology review is to acquaint the reader with the available and emerging technology options for processing of mixed municipal waste for resource recovery.
