Abstract The Pamlico River estuary of eastern North Carolina is a relatively oligotrophic ecosystem which is entering the initial stages of cultural eutrophication. The estuary is naturally rich in phosphorus and indirect evidence indicates that nitrogen probably limits primary production. Investigations into the various pathways of nitrogen movement and transformation were needed to determine the importance of nitrogen in controlling production in the estuary. In order to answer these questions, a study of the nitrogen cycle of the estuary was undertaken.
