Abstract The structure and activities of the Environmental Protection Agency, Region VII, Field Investigations Section are summarized and some 90,000 hours of collective field operational experience with thirteen makes of commercially available automatic wastewater samplers is presented. The results of five separate sampler performance studies are reported which indicated significant differences in the wastewater chemistry of samples collected concurrently by different automatic compositors and manual sampling methods. High vacuum samplers were found to collect concentrations of nonfilterable solids which were in some instances two and three times as great as levels found in samples collected by slower acting samplers and by manual methods. Minimum variations in solids data directly traceable to differences in samplers and collection methods were on the order of 9 to 24 percent. Hydraulic measurement methods related to wastewater sampling activities are discussed. The precision of three independent flow measurements were found to be approximately plus or minus 10 percent.
