||Concern over the long term health effects of trace quantities of synthetic organic chemicals (SOC) found in many U.S. community drinking water sources has prompted an intense research effort to find economical and effective removal processes. A rapid-method for the design of full-scale fixed bed adsorbers from small-column studies, known as the small-scale column test (RSSCT) has been developed. The scope of the study was to design and conduct a RSSCT at the pilot plant well site in Suffolk County, New York, to stimulate a long period of pilot plant operation. RSSCT is a promising technique for determining full-scale adsorber performance but further research is needed on the effect of TOC preloading on the RSSCT process and the field comparison of the RSSCT with full-scale plants to establish its ability to predict full-scale performance.
