Abstract A field test was conducted to determine the feasibility of using a polyamide reverse-osmosis membrane in hollow fine fiber configuration for closed-loop treatment of rinse water from a Watts-type nickel bath. Performance of the membrane module was determined by measuring the productivity (flow rate of purified water) and rejection (separation efficiency) as a function of operating time. Performance was monitored over 1600 hours (67 days) of operation and 2300 hours (96 days) of exposure to nickel rinse waters. The results of the tests combined with the results from numerous commercial installations indicate that the economics of closed-loop recovery of nickel rinse waters by reverse osmosis are generally attractive. Depending on certain factors specific to each plating line, the capital investment for a reverse osmosis system can be recovered in as little as one year or less of operation.
