Abstract |
The Environmental Protection Agency has determined a need to develop guidance on the proper use and interpretation of meteorological remote sensing devices. To this end, an experiment will be conducted at the Boulder Atmospheric Observatory during April 1995. The objectives of this experiment are to develop guidance on acceptance testing and calibration procedures, update sodar and radar performance statistics, determine the usefulness of sodar-derived estimates of sigma(sub w) and sigma (sub theta) and perform sodar beam characterization. The experiment will include data from four sodars, two radars, tower-based in situ instruments, and balloon soundings. The standard deviation of wind direction (sigma(sub theta)) and standard deviation of the vertical wind velocity (sigma(sub w)) are important variables for regulatory air quality modeling. Unfortunately, little attention has been given to the accuracy of these estimates because of the difficulty in comparing sodar-derived estimates with in situ measurements. |
